E-Commerce Fundraising Leader Delivers Improved Online Functionality for Multiple User Segments

Robust CMS platform recommended by online solutions provider Component Web Services (CWS) helps Big Noodle Books exponentially improve non-profit user experience while reducing customer service overhead.

Fairfield, NJ, September 28th, 2012 — The challenges of inheriting a legacy website can be daunting — especially for a technology-driven company like Big Noodle Books, which provides non-profit organizations and academic institutions with an online fundraising platform designed to promote literacy.

Component Web Services’ initial assessment revealed issues for internal administrators as well as fundraising customers and book buyers, according to CWS President & CEO Kevin B. Kimmel. “The site’s original content management system was custom-built using an open source PHP platform,” he explains. “With limited documentation and technical complexity of use, frustration and abandonment levels were at an all-time high.”

The greatest challenge, according to Maureen Walsh, VP, Marketing and Communications for Big Noodle Books, was that the site serves not only as the company’s primary marketing tool, but actually delivers the product itself. She explains, “This was a complex build, targeting multiple, distinct audiences and requiring superior creative problem solving. It was more than building a site to tell a story, or pitch a product.”

Based on recommendations from CWS, Big Noodle unanimously decided to redevelop its site from the ground up. By segmenting various users, CWS worked with the design team to develop two clearly marked navigation paths to guide users to relevant information. The site, completed in record time, positions the organization for real growth, and customer feedback has been extremely positive in the first few months since launch, according to Walsh.

She adds, “Component Web Services was, in my book, the only choice for the project. We needed to build the entire supply chain into the site, integrate with third-party vendors, and make it easy to use. Mission accomplished.”
